Conference Center to Host MLK Celebration

‘Keep Alive the Dream’ an annual showcase

The 28th annual ‘Keep Alive the Dream’ World Arts Federation celebration will be held Monday, Jan. 21, from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the New Beginnings Conference Center, 3300 N.E. 172nd Ave.

World Arts Foundation, Inc. is proud to produce “Keep Alive the Dream,” Portland’s 28th consecutive tribute to a great American hero and world citizen, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year’s celebration will be held at the New Beginnings Conference Center, 3300 N.E. 172nd (off Sandy Boulevard) on the MLK national holiday, Monday, Jan. 21, from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The theme of this year’s program is Standing on the Shoulders.

“We not only stand on the shoulders of those who have come before us, but also those who are among us,” said organizers of the event.

The program includes an array of community speakers from various civic and social community organizations.

Featured artists will include the Jefferson Dancers; the Ghanaian Kukatonon African Drummers and Dancers; a Portland string quintet; the Aurora Choir; and Portland Public Schools elementary and high school bands and choirs.

The Dream Village, a marketplace where vendors and exhibitors offer local arts, products, services and information, will be open during the event.

“Keep Alive the Dream” is a community event for all ages, promising to be an exciting celebration of entertainment, education, multicultural exchange and tasty dining.

The expansive 12,000 square foot New Beginnings facility provides a new dimension to the television and live production quality that ensures a spectacularly improved celebration. The program will be audio/video streamed on the Internet, Portland Public Schools Television Services, Portland Cable Media, and KBOO Radio (90.7 FM.)

The City of Roses will showcase the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by honoring him with a variety of cultural expressions of song, oration, dance and drumming.

“Keep Alive the Dream” is recognized regionally and nationally as one of the finest community-based celebrations in the U.S., honoring one of the most renown and respected citizens of the world, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

After more than a quarter century of consecutive commemorations, World Arts Foundation, Inc. humbly offers to give voice to the heritage of ordinary citizens’ struggle for peace, social justice, civil rights, and human dignity.

The Lifetime Achievement Awards, a traditional centerpiece in the program, recognizes individuals and organizations for exemplary community service. This distinguished group has been selected for having “gone the extra mile” to give the greater Portland metropolitan community a higher quality of life in the spirit of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A $5 donation or five units of non-perishable foods will be collected at the door and given to local food banks.
