Grammys for Spalding and mentor Memory

Portland jazz bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding once again was honored at the annual Grammy Awards Sunday in Los Angeles, but this time she joined her mentor, Portland trumpeter Thara Memory on stage as both won Grammys.
Spalding and Memory won for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists, for their song “City of Roses,” which is on Spalding’s “Radio Music Society” Album. The album also won Spalding the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
Memory, a long-time Portland jazz musician and instructor, has been Spalding’s music teacher since she was 8 years old.
Spalding was the Grammy’s Best New Artist in 2011.
