The African American Alliance for Home Ownership, a non-profit community based organization, will sponsor the first annual East Portland Housing Resource Festival on Saturday, Aug. 23 from noon to 8 p.m. at Lent’s Park.

New and old residents are encouraged to get access to affordable housing and homeownership resources as well as other resources in the community. Local vendors, a kids area, live music, and a “homes for sale” bus tour are other highlights of the free and open to the public event.

The African American Alliance for Homeownership began its homeownership programming in 1999. After hosting the fair annually for a number of years, fair organizers realized a need for of on-going services for minority, first-time buyers.

While the impetus for the creation of the non-profit was to help African Americans in Portland buy a home of their own, the organization has expanded to include the full range of housing counseling services that are available to all persons regardless of race, gender and ethnicity, and in accordance with state and federal fair housing law.

AAAH currently administers a host of free programs such as the DPAL (Down Payment Assistance Loan), IDA (Individual Development Account), Homebuyer education/certification classes, pre-purchase and loss mitigation and foreclosure prevention counseling.
