Environmental activists from Greenpeace unfurl colored banners while hanging from the St. Johns Bridge and kayakers join them below in an effort to stop an icebreaker ship in Portland for repairs from departing to the arctic to help Royal Dutch Shell drill for oil. Last week’s protest generated worldwide attention to efforts to protect fragile ocean ecosystems and fight climate change. The ship’s departure was delayed for two days as it took a sustained and coordinated effort by law enforcement and public safety officers to open up a path for the ship.
