Two new bontebok — a species considered among the most handsome and least athletic of African antelope — debuted at the Oregon Zoo last week. A conservation success, the bontebok was hunted to the brink of extinction in the 18th and 19th centuries by Dutch settlers to southern Africa, many of whom viewed them as pests competing for farmland.
