Albina Head Start and Early Head Start, the pre-kindergarten program serving families from Portland’s disadvantaged and minority communities, has named one of its buildings in honor of the late Gladys Waters, an educator and mentor known for her compassionate care during her 40 years of work for the local organization.

The Hughes Memorial Albina Head Start building on Northeast Mallory and Falling Street was recently rededicated in her name and now will be known as the Gladys Waters Center.

“Even though Gladys isn't with us, I'm sure she is smiling down on us with tears of joy,” said an Albina Head Start representative.
