Thomas Martin, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and pillar of his community, passed away on July 29th at the age of 85. Born on October 25, 1938, in Delray Beach, Florida, Thomas led a life marked by service, dedication, and an enduring commitment to family, career, and community.
Raised in Chicago, Thomas’s journey began with his service in the United States Air Force, which brought him to Oregon—a place he would proudly call home for the rest of his life. After his military service, he pursued higher education at Portland State University, where he earned a Master’s degree in Business. This achievement paved the way for a successful career that included work at the U.S. Postal Service and Bonneville Power Administration.
After retiring from Bonneville, Thomas channeled his entrepreneurial spirit into founding “Martin’s Cleaning Service,” a business that thrived under his leadership and became a trusted name in the community. His work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence were hallmarks of both his career and personal life.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Thomas had a passion for videography. He captured countless moments and memories for his family and community, preserving the stories and events that mattered most.
Thomas was also deeply committed to community service. For over 40 years, he served on the board for Sickle Cell awareness and support, contributing his time, energy, and expertise to a cause close to his heart. His long-standing dedication to this cause reflected his compassion and desire to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
A devoted family man, Thomas raised seven children, four of whom survive him today with six stepchildren , along with his grandchildren and countless great-grandchildren. His family was his greatest source of pride, and he was a guiding light to them all—providing wisdom, strength, and unconditional love.
Thomas Martin’s life was a testament to the values of hard work, service, and love. His legacy will be carried on by his family and the many people whose lives he touched through his professional accomplishments, creative pursuits, and tireless community service. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Services will be held at 11am Wednesday, August 14th at Highland Christian Center, 7600 NE Glisan St, Portland, OR 97213.
