Tony Ray Washington: A Pillar of Community and Loving Family Man

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Mr. Tony Ray Washington following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Portland, Oregon, on May 9, 1956, Tony passed away peacefully in his hometown on May 21, 2023.


Tony attended King Elementary and Jefferson High School in Portland, with a brief spell at Chanute High School, Kansas during his sophomore year. A natural sportsman, Tony's athletic prowess was undeniable. His exceptional skill as a baseball player led to his induction into the Senior Babe Ruth Baseball League Hall of Fame. He also excelled in basketball and football, leaving an indelible mark on all who witnessed his athletic abilities.


After school, Tony began his professional journey with notable positions at Portland City Hall. He ultimately found his niche in media, serving as an Advertising Manager for the Portland Observer. His passion for communication extended beyond his career, as he tirelessly pursued his dream of launching his own magazine, "Imagine That."


In addition to his professional endeavors, Tony played an integral role in his community. He was responsible for organizing several Oregon Pageants, and was instrumental in establishing Mothers Against Gang Violence, highlighting his commitment to improving his local community.


In his leisure time, Tony was an avid outdoorsman who found peace in fishing and communing with nature. He was a dedicated sports fan, particularly of the Kansas City Chiefs, enjoyed watching survival shows, and cherished moments slow dancing with his wife.

Tony's faith was a significant part of his life. He was saved 2.5 years ago and found spiritual home in the Community Church of God. His regular study of the word and attendance at services, as well as his bond with Pastor Franklin, provided him peace and comfort that was instrumental in his journey until his transition.

Tony is survived by his wife, Helen Washington. He was a loving father to Marcus, Deandre, Ashley, Destini, and Christopher, and a nurturing figure to stepchildren Jerome, Ebony, Rahsaan, and Alex. Siblings, Ronald Washington, Mark and Cynthia Washington, Audrey “Peaches” Washington, Charles Jackson, Leif Washington, Carry Ann Washington, Roxanne Washington and Dennis Payne Jr., and a host of beloved grandchildren and foster children. He will be remembered by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends.


Tony also leaves behind a host of beloved grandchildren and foster children. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joyce and Duane Washington, brothers Charles, Gary, and Cory, daughter Anna Marie, and nephews Christopher and La'Ron.


The funeral service will be held on June 9, 2023, at Eastside Imago Dei Church, located at 3130 SE 148th Ave, Portland, Oregon 97236. Tony will be laid to rest at Skyline Memorial Gardens, with a repass back at Eastside Imago Dei Church.
